Beauty and grace, qualities attributed to swans
This beauty has made her nest amongst all this garbage.
What is wrong with people who just toss their rubbish away
without any thought or concern about where it ends up.
Thankfully she doesn't know how badly some people behave, her only concern is incubating her eggs. I think this is part of the river Cam that runs through the town. Swans breed here every year and previous babies have grown into healthy adults so the rubbish doesn't hinder them. I have a feeling that there might be a working party of volunteers who clear it up now and again.
Daddy swan was just a few feet away
keeping a very watchful eye on some ducks
There was also a family of moorhens
But daddy wasn't bothered about the moorhens
he didn't give up until the ducks flew away,maybe the ducks steal their eggs.

Her other babies were underneath her and I'm sure that lone one eventually joined them.

Swans are SO beautiful, but I understand they can be quite vicious.
ReplyDeleteThey can be aggressive if threatened or sense danger, especially in defence of their nests. They usually send out a loud warning hiss first. If that doesn’t work they spread their wings as if to attack, but I think like most wild animals it’s mostly bluster to get rid of a potential threat.

DeleteI’ve never seen a swans nest before. Sad about the trash, but I’m glad there are volunteers willing to clean it up.
ReplyDeleteI think there are quite a few in the area, I saw another one on a walk yesterday, in the country, very isolated and quiet.
DeleteI love seeing your wildlife and birds. Your swan is gorgeous. I hope you'll be able to see her babies soon! (We are seeing more litter at the ditch. Our neighborhood is planning a trash pick-up soon. )

DeleteI think I know where that might be. I believe it's been difficult organising litter picking groups with all the restrictions nowadays. lots of individuals clean up the footpaths as they go but I doubt anyone goes wading in the river.
ReplyDeleteAt some areas of the river it's possible to scoop the rubbish up with long nets or poles.

It makes me very angry. It seems there are many voluntary groups throughout the UK that have regular litter pick ups, tidy ups etc. These days discarded facemasks are also a problem. Grrrr!

Here in my village we have a retired vicar who collects litter as he jogs around the village! And we used to have litter pick up days but of course the covid restrictions stopped that. Thankfully though there isn't much litter around.

DeleteYour white swans are so lovely Polly, sad to see them with rubbish in their nests. I agree with you re people who drop their rubbish, so bad! A lot of the time their is a bin near by but they just can't be bothered!
ReplyDeleteThose are the worst ones, it infuriates me to see rubbish near a bin, they just don't care. I will look out for them whenever I go into town.
