A Good Read

End of Watch by Stephen King the last of the Bill Hodges trilogy.

Bill Hodges is still running Finders Keepers agency with partner Holly Gibney. One day his old cop partner and friend Pete Huntley asks him to take a look at a crime scene knowing that Bill and Holly often have a ‘nose’ for something that isn’t immediately obvious. Hodges is intrigued by the letter Z written with a marker at the scene.

When similar cases occur Hodges is stunned to discover that evidence points to Brady Hartsfield, the evil psychopathic ‘Mercedes killer’. But it can’t be, Hartsfield is confined to a hospital bed in an unresponsive state after Holly knocked him out to prevent him blowing up a stadium and killing hundreds of teenagers. But Hartsfield has new lethal powers, and still full of hatred he is planning revenge, not just on Hodges and his friends, but on the entire city.

Another excellent page turner from Stephen King.

I will miss Hodges and Holly.

Buster's Diary

It's 4 months since my operation. I went to sleep at the vets with four legs and woke up with three and adapted straight away (well you have to don't you), and have coped admirably ever since.

Here I am just a few days after the op wearing a rather fetching blue waistcoat. Polly sewed up the leg hole I didn't need to stop me getting to the wound. The stitches were internal but I might have licked or nibbled it. The wound healed really well and my hair is growing back nicely.

I enjoy life, our walks, running around, playing with other dogs, sniffing everything, and I enjoy the attention. We met a group of young boys a couple of weeks ago who initially said "Oh poor dog, he's only got three legs" they came over and made a big fuss of me and Polly explained that I was perfectly happy.

Polly hasn't coped as well as me, she gets slightly anxious when I walk on the tiled kitchen floor until I get to the runner on the door side of the kitchen, I slip sometimes. She put a large rug down but that freaked me out (I am easily spooked). I'm getting better at it though, I'm better if I just do it without thinking about it. The kitchen floor is worse than the wooden floors. And sometimes I stumble when walking and turn too quickly.

Elsewhere at home everything is pretty much the same. Rufus started to look  as if he was putting on weight so Polly gave him slightly less dinner and he is looking much better.

This is an area of set aside. Previously it was given over to a few wild flowers and a lot of weeds.
This year though it was full of lovely wild flowers.  Aren't they pretty?

This pretty marigold is growing out of the concrete.

This is how well I am doing, I can still run very fast. I had seen something in the distance, probably a squirrel, it was a bit late in the morning for rabbits to be out. Polly wasn't paying attention properly, she was slow to follow through!

Last May it was just the car on the roof, it's joined by a scooter now!

The fields have been ploughed

I used to go in this stream regularly but I'm not sure I can manage it now. Polly says she loves me but she's not sure she wants to scramble down a 4 foot vertical bank if I get into difficulty!

Checking out one of the Badger extensions.

We've  had lots of rain and the level of the stream that we usually go through is super high

That's how it usually is on the left, just a few inches deep,
and this is how it was a couple of days ago on the right.

I like drinking from muddy puddles!

We've had some very windy weather

Look at Rufus, he doesn't look very comfortable!

Polly is making more quilts, she's made a Christmas one for her daughter in Australia.
She was hoping to deliver it in person but she will have to post it now.

That's all for now

A Rant

I wanted to go to Australia to spend Christmas with my daughter. I booked the flight in February. Last week Singapore Airlines cancelled it. I probably could have found another carrier but Australia is locked in, I would have to spend 2 weeks in a hotel room at my own expense.

I AM SICK OF COVID, sick of the constant talk about it, it’s everywhere, it pops up on websites. And those constant irritating recorded announcements in shops and supermarkets are driving me crazy.

I'm sick of not being able to find accurate statistics about covid. For example: a man tests positive for covid but has no symptoms. 26 days later he gets run over and dies. Covid is mentioned on the death certificate and entered as another statistic. That is not accurate recording. If a cancer patient died in a car crash would cancer be recorded as the cause of death? On Friday the covid symptom study app recorded 491 estimated cases in Chelmsford, is that the total amount tested, positive test results, people having symptoms or people seriously ill in hospital? There's too much scaremongering and not enough true facts, it's wrong to publish uncorroborated information.

I'm sick of politicians using covid to score points off one another. I don’t listen to the news anymore. I’m kind and care about my family and friends and community. But we are not all in this together. We're being told to observe the measures, to put our lives on hold to keep strangers healthy - really?

I think the amount of people seriously ill with covid is still a very small percentage of the population.

I have spoken to many people in town and supermarkets who feel the same as I do. I would very much like to conduct a straw poll, I think the majority of the population would feel the same too.

This virus is going to be with us for a long time, probably forever, a vaccine isn't likely any time soon, even if one is developed it has to be tested, trialed and observed for side effects, all of which takes a lot of time.  Do we want to be living like this for the next 6 months, a year, two years?

We have to suck it up and get on with life, we can’t live in fear and we cannot bankrupt our economies. I sympathise with people with compromised health, but if people are worried they have the option to stay at home, anyone with flu symptoms should stay at home. The rest of us should get on with life and go with herd immunity. Too much misery has been caused already, we should not inflict more.

We have to start living again. I'm 72, I want to live the time I have left.

I don't think I would be so angry if I was able to visit my daughter.

My summer clothes can be packed away now.

Scorpio October 23rd - November 21st

Miss Claire Voyant's horoscope for Scorpio

Sharing your Scorpio birthday with, among a few million others, Pablo Picasso, Hilary Clinton, Bill Gates, Julia Roberts and Marie Antoinette

The Personality
It could be said that imaginative, emotional and intense Scorpio is the most misconstrued sign of the zodiac, being more like a fire sign than water. Turbulent with a deadly sting you don't mess with a Scorpio. They make the other signs, (apart from Aries maybe) look like wusses! Would you believe I have Scorpio and Aries daughters!!

Like their celestial spirit animal, Scorpios lie in wait and strike when least expected, life is a game of chess for them, calculating and plotting several steps ahead in order to orchestrate an eventual checkmate. Their intentions aren't villainous, Scorpios simply know what they want and aren't afraid to work hard and play the long game to get it. They never show their cards and their enigmatic nature is what makes them so seductive and beguiling. Scorpio is the sign most closely associated with sex. But sex isn't solely about pleasure, they also crave the physical closeness, spiritual illumination, and emotional intimacy sex can provide.

Scorpio is ruled by Pluto, the planet that governs both destruction and transformation. On a good day, Scorpio energy is ambitious and enticing. On a bad day, however, the shadowy side of Scorpio is fueled by a relentless desire for control.
When they build trust with others, Scorpios demonstrate unparalleled empathy, depth, and commitment that brighten even the darkest parts of Scorpio’s magical psyche.

Scorpio's prediction
The universe is making it very clear that now is not the time to rock the boat, you must prioritize, rest and recharge your batteries. It is also crucial to watch your health.  A full moon in your partnership sector arrives on October 31 (solar seventh house). Normally, this would be a phenomenal time for commitment, moving in, or marriage, but don't make any hasty decisions.

Livingstone

After my safari at Luangwa I went to Livingstone, staying at the Waterberry Zambezi Lodge on the mighty Zambezi river.

The lodge was quiet at the time of my stay so I had this house all to myself!

lounge area and single bed, another bed and a kitchen and dining table
were at the other end behind where I'm standing taking the photo.

Upstairs

Four singles and one double bed in total, I used the double room with en-suite.

The Zambezi river, low at the time of my visit.

Upstairs lounge area in main hotel

The grounds were lovely

Victoria Falls

In the high season those rocks wouldn't be visible, the falls would be raging

The Devil's Pool at Livingston Island
on the edge of the falls

To get to the pool we had to swim in a triangle route, it was very scary.
That's me swimming towards the others, and that's the edge of the falls behind them!!

We were hauled out by rope and scrambled over rocks. Afterwards it occured to me that if we left the pool via a rope and rocks why did we do the scary swim to get into it? I can only guess it was done that way to add a bit of adventure!!!
The night before going to the pool I was sharing a dinner table with a couple who had done it that day. They said the swim to the pool was scary but well worth it. I did a “What, wait, did you say swim to the pool? I thought we would get there by boat” “You have to swim, the water is too rocky for a boat” they said. Whoa, I went straight to the office to cancel but they said to go, it’s a nice trip, take my costume and then if I want to do it when I get there I could!

Walking down to the boiling pot.
The left side of the bridge is in Zimbabwe and the right side is in Zambia. People were doing bungee jumping off the bridge. I did consider doing it but only for a few seconds, then came to my senses!

The boiling pot is the name given to this area where the water has fallen down the ravines, along the river and into a Gorge where it swirls around, and, over time it has carved out a deep pool. In the rainy season the spray created by this looks like a huge pot of boiling water.

Shopping in Livingstone, looking for a t-shirt for my grandson.

The last day of my holiday I treated myself to a beautiful delicious dinner on the Royal Livingstone train

Pre dinner drinks as the train set off on a short journey out of town and back.
The safari and Livingstone was a wonderful holiday.

Zambia

I started this post ages, ago, soon after writing about my safari in Tanzania

After my safari in Tanzania I fancied doing another one, but this time staying inside a national park.
In 2014 I chose Zambia because I also wanted to visit Victoria Falls. My stay was in the South Luangwa National Park. The first 3 days were at Nkwali safari camp on the bend of the Luangwa River.

My hut

Those bamboo doors were all that separated me from wildlife at night time! It was best not to dwell on the nocturnal sounds, animals want a quiet life to go about their business undisturbed.

Open air shower room

The very dry Luangwa River

Communal lounge area

Doesn't she look sweet

Those teeth will rip through the belly of her prey in seconds

Going through my photos later a shiver went through me as I realise just how close this
lion came to our jeep, and had he wanted to he could easily have jumped up into it!!

Someone once said that buffalo look at you as if you owe them money!

Mid morning break on a walking safari

cute

deadly

Termite mound, difficult to believe that these tiny insects build such huge rock hard mounds

Sundowners on our evening safaris. That's me on the left.

After three nights at Nkwali I moved to Nsefu Safari Camp, still on the Luangwa River
My hut

Reception and lounge area

Although we had early starts I enjoyed this safari more because we were out early
enough to see more animals.
Breakfast was about 6.oo then out in the jeeps. Me on the right.
It was cold at that time but soon warmed up to another gloriously hot day.

I think this is a Tawny Eagle

How cute is this little Brown Hooded Kingfisher

Aren't their markings exquisite

This was a very unpleasant scene that we encountered whilst driving back to camp.
Hyenas and vultures fighting over the carcass of a baby elephant.
The stench was unbearable, it was grim, but it's what happens in the wild.

African Fish Eagle

Back to camp for a light lunch and a siesta. After a couple of hours rest we went out in the jeeps again.

Baby near my hut

Re-united with mum and on their way
I could now go to my hut for a siesta

Chillin

I didn't see leopards on my first safari, I was very excited when we saw her, so beautiful.

Female leopard marking territory

Female Waterbucks

Pretty Carmine Bee Eater

Hippos are shy and usually run away, I think we accidentally startled this one, it just froze.

It had a lot of scars on its back and face.

We stayed out until after dark which came quite early. Then back to camp for dinner.

The food was excellent and plentiful at both locations.

And finally

something to make you smile!

After 3 nights at Nsefu I went to Livingstone - coming soon.
