Feeling Sorry For Myself

Well dear reader I am bruised and battered after a nasty fall yesterday. I misjudged a kerb and all ten stone of me slammed down onto the pavement. A lovely young lady came to my rescue and stayed with me until my daughter arrived. The first thing I thought was "I've broken my glasses, that's £300 to replace them"! The left  side of my face took the brunt of the fall and it is a mess. My eye socket is full of blood and around the eye is a kaleidoscope of red blue and purple. My cheek and chin are also bruised. Our wonderful NHS took good care of me with a CT scan which thankfully confirmed nothing is broken. The bruising will go, I have some cream to prevent infection and the eye clinic said the blood will disperse in about two weeks. My arms and legs are aching as well.

It wasn't too bad at first but then I woke up to this.
My daughter said I shouldn't worry about it being an age related fall, it was an accident, and she is right. I didn't feel dizzy or disoriented beforehand, it was just a clumsy accident.

oOo

On a lighter note, last Thursday my U3a group marked the VE day 80th anniversary with a visit from none other than Sir Winston Churchill, as portrayed by Tony Harris.

He told us all about Churchill's life. He's very good.

The hall was packed

The sandwiches and cakes were plentiful and delicious.

  1. Oh dear Polly, not nice.. the bruising looks awful I can't lie, but it will fade. At least you didn't break a bone.. Plenty of rest and paracetamol perhaps while you heal? Treat yourself with some thing tasty and easy to eat? Take care x

  2. Dear Polly - I was very sad to see this post following your fall. It looks really tender and very sore. Thank goodness that the NHS found that you had not caused yourself any permanent damage. Hope your feeling much better soonXXX

  3. Oh dear, sorry to hear about your nasty fall! Yes, accidents do happen and they only take a split second, don't they. Glad nothing was broken and that you didn't concuss your brain. Tell the curious you got in a fist fight in a bar and they should see the other guy!

    Lieve groeten,

  6. Oh, Polly! I'm so relieved that nothing was broken. It's so scary when things like that happen. I once fell on my steps and hit my forehead. It hurt, but I was OK - but I woke up the next day with two black eyes! I looked a fright! Well, I hope you can get some rest and that you'll feel better soon.

  7. Ooh er, not nice echoing Chris’s words. Not nice at all. My mother used to make light of such tumbles by laughing and saying- ‘I should put more water with it’ but that doesn’t take the physical pain away though. Time for a good long soak in a warm bath!
The committee who organised your function did well by the look of it. That’s a great turnout for something only a few will have memories of

    1. It was Cathy, and there were a few people who had childhood memories of the event.

  9. That does look so very nasty. It's such a shock when you do something like that. Poor you. I hope the aches and pains soon abate.
Your VE Day celebrations look so good and such fun.

  10. Oh Polly, I am so, SO sorry. I have face-planted myself in the past and I know how painful it can be, all over the body. While no broken bones are a relief, that still doesn't stop the pain and discomfort. It's scary when that occurs and I'm glad someone could stay with you till your daughter arrived and that you could quickly get an evaluation and scans. Your daughter is right -- it was an accident. But it still shakes a person up. I hope the healing is fast and thorough with no lingering after effects.

    1. My husband tripped and fell two years ago landed on his head and broke his glasses, but the lenses were ok so the optician just put them in new frames

    2. One lens broke, and the frame is slightly marked so I think it will be compromised.

I'm sorry about your fall, but glad that you are recovering well. The VE celebration looked very well done. Take good care.

  13. Polly, sorry to read and see the results of your fall. I had a similar injury many years ago and in my case, I "misjudged" a garden hose and took a tumble. The difference was that I chipped a front tooth and had the most colorful face for many weeks afterwards as if I had been in a fight. The bruises did heal in time as yours will. Luckily, like yourself, I did not have anything broken and was also checked out at a local hospital.

On a cheerier note, that celebration looked like it was a wonderful event.

    1. Since falling over I have heard of so many people doing the same, in gardens, kitchens, in the street. Yesterday the area directly under my eye was a beautiful shade of crimson!
