A Week Off

I have just had a week's holiday. "Where did you go?" I hear you say. Well dear reader I didn't go anywhere, I had a week at home doing nothing - no clubs, no swimming, no hospital volunteering, no church cafe, it was wonderful.
I know that being retired means I can do nothing all the time, but having always been an active person I wanted to continue doing things, and as we age I think it's important to be as active as possible. However much as I enjoy all my activities it was getting to the point where every day I would wake up thinking, "What am I doing today?" or "What time do I have to be out by?" I was permanently on the go, and I felt very tired. So now I feel rested with a fully charged battery, ready to resume my activities.

I think I will have a home stay holiday more often 😊

  1. I think you have the right attitude. It is good not to have to watch the clock or count the days.

  2. So true, it's easy to be far too busy in retirement, glad you've had a good break. What are you knitting?

    1. Hi Alison, friends have given me wool and I've bought some. I'm knitting a ton of 6"x6" squares to make blankets which my WI chair will take to a depot to eventually be taken to Ukraine.

  3. I agree. We need to step back and relax every so often. It gave me a new perspective when I did it last month.

  4. I have been retired for 14 years. Being a very involved and active person, it was a difficult transition for me. However, now I enjoy it. It took some figuring out. In the beginning I just relaxed, did what I wanted, and shopped. Then when I realized I wasn't really happy, I started planning more activities such as joining a book club, inviting guests for dinner, playing canasta etc. I think I've found a happy balance of still being involved but still having time off for me. Your home stay holiday sounds like a good idea now and then.

    2. Thank you Ivy. I originally switched off comments because I thought my anonymous commenter might say something about "old hags" but on reflection I think it would have given me a good laugh!

  9. Being retired doesn't mean that you can't step back and have a day or week all to yourself. Glad your staycation was a good one for you. Sometimes, activities can overtake free time.

    1. You're right Beatrice, activites can easily take over, particularly helping and volunteering, when the usual reply is "Yes I will help with that". Now I say "Let me check my calendar" and that gives me time to really think about what I want to do.
